Part 2: Super Mario Land 2 to Donkey Kong Land

If Super Mario Land was a Game Boy version of SMB, then Super Mario Land 2 was a Game Boy version of Super Mario World. It featured an overworld map, replayable levels, new powerups, and a much closer perspective. It also introduced a new character, Wario, to the Nintendo world. At this point, Game Boy began separating itself from its new counterpart, the SNES, although some games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening were very much based on their console equals.

Bash it, Wario!Remember Wario? Well, he eventually got his own game, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. In it, he pilfered from the pirates of Kitchen Island (whose leader, Captain Syrup, is female), and found their hidden stolen statue of Princess Toadstool, only to have it taken away by Mario (boo, hiss!) This game, obviously, was a very large departure from previous games, with its run-and-bash structure. Like SML2, it had a map screen, replayable levels, and the like. It also had games of skill, huge bosses, and a really memorable theme.

See the gorilla. A few months after Wario Land, a very significant device came out, Super Game Boy. This unit plugged into the SNES, and replaced the four shades of gray with four or more colors. The first game to use this new technology was Donkey Kong, a remake of the original arcade game, with an additional 96 levels. Many other games would come later, including Donkey Kong Land, which was significant in that it brought computer-rendered characters to Game Boy. Unfortunately, it suffered from terrible blurring problems that made it virtually unplayable on anything other than Super Game Boy (until Game Boy Color came out). In fact, once it was packaged with the SNES, some people played Game Boy games only on SGB.
