A Brief History of Video Game Movies

There are a handful of movies based on video games, some good, some bad. Here's a look at the ones I've seen.

Super Mario Bros.

Despite popular opinion, this is a very good movie. Problem is, it's not a very good Mario movie. Dennis Hopper is great, but the people working on the animatronic Yoshi admissedly hadn't played the game. I can only imagine the chaos if these people were making the Pokémon movie (and the Missingno glitch continues to cause problems with computers today...).

Memorable quotes:

"Trust the fungus!"

"The goombas are dancing again!"

Street Fighter (live action movie)

I really loved this movie. It's not completely true to the game, but that would be lame. Anyway, Raul Julia (who died shortly after the movie was made,) plays the nefarious General M. Bison (which is funny, since supposedly the M stands for Major), leader of Shadowlaw, the terrorist group that is located at the center for all evil in the universe, Thailand. He demands $40 billion or he will execute his hostages. His opponent is Guile, played by Jean-Claude Van-Damme.

Fun fact: Capcom actually made a game based on the movie.

Mortal Kombat

A very good movie that borders on being a psychological thriller. It's the most true to the game it's named after.

Pokémon: The First Movie

Basically an extension of the TV show. Pokémon is obviously very based on the game. Do I really need to tell you any more? Then read the review!

Movies I haven't seen

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

Wing Commander

Future Movies

Tomb Raider

Man, this really lowers the bar for game-to-movie conversions.

Pokémon: The Movie 2000

That's right! Need I say more?
