First Appearance: Showdown in Pewter City Occupation: Pokémon Trainer/Pokémon Breeder/Gym Leader Biography: In an effort to become the world's greatest Pokémon breeder (I could make a sick joke here, but I won't), Brock has joined the group and travels throughout the world. Initially forced to care for his many brother and sisters, his father revealed himself once he was defeated by Ash. On the road, Brock is often forced to listen to Ash and Misty's many arguments about her bike, his stupidity, or just about anything else. Of course, this doesn't stop him from using a pickup line on the local Nurse Joy or Officer Jenny (Brock left the show in the middle of the second season).
First Appearance: Pokémon, I Choose You! Occupation: Pokémon Trainer Biography:Often confused with a condiment, Ash Ketchum's desire is to become the greatest Pokémon master of all time. This desire often causes him to become excessively arrogant and overconfident. Sometimes the only reason he survives these mistakes is because of Pikachu. Ash is usually being followed by Misty and Brock, his best friends.
First Appearance: Pokémon, I Choose You! Occupation: Mom (full-time job, I tell you) Biography:Ash Ketchum's mother, Mrs. Ketchum worries incessantly about her son (though she need not worry, since Misty seems to do a very good job of looking out for Ash). Where's Mr. Ketchum? Well, after taking one look at his son, he probably ran off, never to be seen again. Seriously, though, no one knows.
First Appearance: Pokémon: The Movie 2000 Occupation: Collector/Certified Nut Biography: Considering that Lawrence III is the villain of the movie, it's very odd that he spends so little time directly fighting our heroes, and that the film never mentions his name. In any event, this guy flies around in his airship, and goes and starts capturing the Legendary Birds (real smart), in order to flush out the guardian of the sea.
First Appearance: Pokémon: The Movie 2000 Occupation: Bratty Kid/Conch Horn Player Biography: Not much is known about Melody, except that she and her older sister both have been the Festival Maiden (a job that entails playing a Conch Horn). Melody's part suddenly becomes more than a ritual when Lawrence III starts capturing the Legendary Birds, throwing nature completely out of whack.
Factoid: Melody has amazing telepathic powers, demonstrated by her ability to know Misty's name without being told.
First Appearance: Pokémon, I Choose You! Occupation: Pokémon Trainer Biography:The grandson of Professor Oak, Gary Oak uses every chance he gets to make fun of Ash, and is always being following by his personal group of cheerleaders.
First Appearance: Pokémon, I Choose You! Occupation: Pokémon Researcher Biography:The grandfather of Gary Oak, Professor Oak really seems to have more of an interest in Ash. He studies Pokémon in Pallet Town, and is very well known and respected.
General Biography: Actually about five zillion people voiced by the same person, Nurse Joy not only treats Pokémon, but she must constantly repel the advances of Brock. The horror!
First Appearance: Sparks Fly for Magnemite Biography: Extremely apathetic (that means she doesn't care), this Nurse Joy misdiagnosed an excess of electricity in Pikachu as a cold. Then again, she probably doesn't get many patients considering the town has only four permanent residents. Things became urgent once the power goes out, but it is eventually restored, and Joy vows to become a better nurse, just in case the population should suddenly skyrocket to five.
First Appearance: Mewtwo Strikes Back (Pokémon: The First Movie) Biography: Used by Mewtwo during his attempt at world domination/destruction, she was kidnapped some time before the main events of the movie. Unaware of her true identity at that time, she served Mewtwo as a go-between, directing the greatest trainers in the world to New Island. Once released from Mewtwo's powers, she forgot everything about her role in his plan (which puts her ahead of the parents in the audience, who never understood it in the first place).
First Appearance: The Joy of Pokémon Biography: Because this Nurse Joy must repeatedly paddle from island to island, she has acquired larger muscles and special skills. When she was young, she rescued a Magikarp, which has saved her on several occasions.
General Biography: Yet another proliferated character, Jenny must also fend off Brock (and who can blame her?) Oh yeah, sometimes she fights crime, too.
First Appearance: The Song of Jigglypuff Biography: Unlike most Officer Jennies, Neon Town's was very irate and confrontational, mainly due to a lack of sleep. This problem was remedied by Jigglypuff's singing.
First Appearance: The Lost Lapras Occupation: Pokémon Trainer/Pokémon Watcher/Artist Biography:Tracey is a self-proclaimed Pokémon watcher (join the club, buddy), who goes around observing and sketching (arg, another bad pun name!) Pokémon. Tracey idolizes Professor Oak, And joins up with Ash and Misty in order to meet him (boy, is he in for it).
First Appearance: Battle Aboard the St. Anne Occupation: Head of Team Rocket/Gym Leader Biography: As the leader of Team Rocket, Giovanni is often forced to chide Jessie, James, and Meowth for their failings. His headquarters were destroyed by Mewtwo once he realized Giovanni was using him.
Factoid: Giovanni is derived from Motzart's Don Giovanni, Don being the word for the headof the Mafia.
First Appearance: The Breeding Center Secret Occupation: Team Rocket Underling Biography: Partner of Cassidy, Butch (or as he is called by James, botch) was jailed after his breeding center scam was discovered. He later attempted to steal Pokémon using a Drowzee on Mandarin Island, but his plans were once again foiled and he was jailed- again. In yet another episode, he is discovered selling fake Pokémon fortune-telling books near Goldenrod City.
First Appearance: The Breeding Center Secret Occupation: Team Rocket Underling Biography: Partner of Butch, Cassidy was jailed after her breeding center scam was discovered. She later attempted to steal Pokémon using a Drowzee on Mandarin Island, but her plans were once again foiled and she was thrown in the slammer. Not one to learn from her mistakes, Cassidy was caught in a fortune-telling book scam. She also seems to have a long-standing feud with Jessie.
First Appearance: Pokémon Emergency! Occupation: Team Rocket Underling Biography: Partner of James, Jessie grew up with very little, probably because her parents needed to save so much so she could go to Pokémon Tech, where she met and flunked out with James. After that, she joined a bike gang and later Team Rocket, since then, Jessie has spent a great deal of her time fruitlessly chasing Pikachu with James and Meowth.
First Appearance: No US Appearance, Appeared in Japanese Pokémon radio drama Occupation: Team Rocket Underling Biography: Ever wondered who cleans up after Jessie, James, and Meowth? Mondo, of course! Apparently, Mondo supplies Team Rocket with all their gadgets, and has quite a bit of affection for Jessie. Mondo has one Pokémon, a ditto (thanks goes to TeamRocket Headquarters: NEXT for this info).
First Appearance: Pokémon Emergency! Occupation: Team Rocket Underling Biography: Partner of Jessie, James grew up with some of the richest people in the world. He resents his betrothal to Jessiebelle, and tries to avoid his parents whenever possible. In fact, he absolutely despises high culture and its rigid rules. James went to Pokémon tech, where he and Jessie earned the lowest score in history, flunked out, joined a bike gang, and eventually Team Rocket. James is the passive member of Team Rocket, often bowing to Jessie's wishes. He has also been known to crossdress occasionally.
First Appearance: Pokémon Paparatzzi Occupation: Pokémon Photographer Biography:Todd goes around photographing Pokémon. He's had his pictures showcased in many magazines, and takes great pride in his work. He meets up with our heroes while trying to photograph Pikachu. Eventually, he helps them out on several occasions, providing vital information in uncovering Butch and Cassidy's breeding center scam.
First Appearance: None Occupation: Nintendo Employee Biography: Though not nearly as out there as Travis (no relation), this "Sixth Sister of Cerulean City" has appeared in two promo videos (DKC and N64). Other than that, not much has come from him, but you can be sure he's hard at work.
First Appearance: Pokémon, I Choose You! Occupation: Pokémon Trainer/Gym Leader Biography:Rejected by her sisters as "underdeveloped," Misty set out to become a great Pokémon trainer. Instead, Ash stole her bike, and then trashed it trying to escape. Misty then decided to hold him accountable for replacing it (given the cost of a bike, I think she's justified!) However, at some point she decided Ash was a heck of a lot better than the bike anyway, and decided to use it as an excuse to follow him. Talk about low standards.
First Appearance: None Occupation: Nintendo Employee Biography: If you've ever met Travis Williams, you'd know why I call him "The Fifth Sensational Sister of Cerulean City." He started out as a game counselor, then went on to host chat at Nintendo Power Source (then on AOL). His style was decidedly strange, whether it was Travia, Acronymia, or the Bedpan of Ticks, chat was always a blast with Trav. You can see Travis on the Jet Force Gemini/DK64 Promo video (Hot Newz 64), but he's decidedly overshadowed by the hyperactive host.
Factoid: Travis Williams has his own brand of trivia, known as Travia.
First Appearance: Charmander the Stray Pokémon Trainer:Ketchum, Ash Biography: One of Ash's early Pokémon, Charmander was acquired after it abandoned its irresponsible trainer. Though initially dependable, it became unresponsive after evolving into Charmeleon (March of the Exeggutor Squad), and even less so after evolving into Charizard (Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon). Charizard does eventually obey, however (Charizard Chills). Later, Charizard would take up residence at Johto's Charific Valley.
First Appearance: Pokémon: The Movie 3 Trainer: Hale, Molly Biography: Imagined by Molly out of a book through the Unown, Entei serves only to protect her, kidnapping Delia Ketchum for her. Enventually, Entei destroys the very Pokémon that created it.
First Appearance: The Song of Jigglypuff Trainer: None (wild) Biography:Jigglypuff wants to be a world-class singer. This desire often manifests itself in an overactive imagination an persistence. When she does sing, however, it puts everyone to sleep (literally!) This angers Jigglypuff, and then she uses her marker (apparently washable, as the marks are gone in the next episode,) to draw on the faces of her victims.
Factoid: Jigglypuffs in general seem to hate Clefairies.
First Appearance: The Crystal Onix Trainer:Sketchit, Tracey Biography: One of Tracey's Pokémon, Marril is often chosen for its acute hearing and superior swimming ability. It's pretty darn cute, too.
First Appearance: Pokémon Emergency! Trainer:Giovanni(?) Biography: One of the few Pokémon that can speak English, Meowth went through this process in order to impress a female Meowth. Meowth traveled to Hollywood to become famous, but only became almost human in the process. He was later taken in by Team Rocket, where he has routinely gotten his tail kicked by an electric mouse.
First Appearance: Mewtwo Strikes Back (Pokémon: The First Movie, and yes, I realize he does appear in several episodes of the show before the movie was released, but the scenes in the movie take place first chronologically) Trainer: Giovanni/Himself Biography: An enhanced clone of Mew, Mewtwo was created for Team Rocket. After realizing he was being used, however, he fled and made plans to annihilate everything except him and his clones. He changed his mind after realizing the important bond humans and Pokémon share. Since then, he's spent most of his time putting up with an oppressive webmaster by the name of S. Reich (hmm... maybe it was a bad idea to let Mewtwo write his own bio).
Factoid: Between 1998 and 2000, Mewtwo has made only three voiced appearances: Pokémon: The First Movie, Bye Bye Psyduck (Who's That Pokémon) and Pokémon Puzzle League.
First Appearance: Pokémon, I Choose You! Trainer:Ketchum, Ash Biography:Ash's first Pokémon (with an apparent case of claustrophobia) was not really thrilled initially, but has since patched things up. Good thing too, because Pikachu, like Brock must also wait through Ash and Misty's petty bickering. He's also constantly getting into humorous situations, often in order to "buff" himself up.
First Appearance: Hypno's Naptime Trainer:Misty Biography: One of Misty's Pokémon, Psyduck is apparently very shy and clumsy. Always good for a laugh, Psyduck seems to be able to always be in the worst place at the wrong time, and love him for that (well, maybe.)
