Mewtwo: Best and Worst

Perhaps no set of cards has influenced the game then those bearing the mark of Pokémon number 150, Mewtwo.

The Best:

Movie Promo Mewtwo (#3 and #14)

Received: (#3) At Pokémon: The First Movie (while supplies lasted) (#14) In Pokémon: The First Movie video/DVD

Card Description
HP: 70
Retreat Cost: 2
Type: Psychic
Weakness: Psychic
Resistance: None

Attacks:

Energy Absorption: Choose up to two energy cards from your discard pile and attach them to Mewtwo.
Cost: 1 Psychic

Psyburn: 40 damage
Cost: 2 Psychic, 1 Colorless

Steve's Analysis: Movie Promo Mewtwo is probably one of the best TCG cards, period. It is rarely used, tough, as most people only have one. If Mewtwo is in your initial hand, try to discard 2 energy (or at least one), then absorb so you can use Psyburn on turn two.

Rocket's Mewtwo

Received: Randomly inserted in Gym Challenge packs

Card Description
HP: 70
Retreat Cost: 2
Type: Psychic
Weakness: Psychic
Resistance: None

Attacks:

Juxtapose: Flip a coin. If heads, switch the number of damage counters on Rocket's Mewtwo with the number of damage counters on the Defending Pokémon (even if it would Knock Out either Pokémon). (It's okay if the Defending Pokémon has no damage counters on it)
Cost: 1 Psychic

Hypnoblast: 20 damage. Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokémon is now Asleep.
Cost: 2 Psychic

Psyburn: 60 Damage
Cost: 3 Psychic, 1 Colorless

Steve's Analysis: This is the first 3-attack card. However, the card is still about even with Movie Promo Mewtwo.

The Worst:

Base Mewtwo

Received: In Base set/base set 2 boosters, also zap theme deck.

Card Description
HP: 60
Retreat Cost: 3
Type: Psychic
Weakness: Psychic
Resistance: None

Attacks:

Psychic: Does 10 damage plus 10 more damage for each energy card attached to the defending Pokémon.
Cost: 1 Psychic, 1 Colorless

Barrier: Discard 1 Psychic energy attached to Mewtwo to prevent all effects of attacks, including damage, done to Mewtwo on your opponent's next turn.
Cost: 2 Psychic

Steve's Analysis: Awful retreat cost, awful attack, just plain awful attack. This card really stinks (don't look at me).

Mewtwo (Promo 12)

Received: In Nintendo Power

Card Description
HP: 60
Retreat Cost: 2
Type: Psychic
Weakness: Psychic
Resistance: None

Attacks:

Energy Control: Flip a coin. If heads, choose a basic energy card attached to 1 of your opponent's Pokémon and attach it to another of your opponent's Pokémon.
Cost: 1 Psychic

Telekinesis: Choose one of your opponent's Pokémon. This attack does 30 damage to that Pokémon. Don't apply Weakness or Resistance for this attack. (Any other effects that would happen after applying Weakness and Resistance still happen.
Cost: 3 Psychic

Steve's Analysis: Dark Kadabra does this so much better, and you can get more than one of it easily.

Mewtwo's cards are easily some of the most important in the game's history. Not bad for someone who doesn't technically talk (hey!)
